RUSSELL WANTED TO kick himself for acting like a bratty teenager who had been left hanging at the prom by the prettiest girl in school. Well, maybe that was getting carried away with his reaction upon learning that Tisha González, the gorgeous waitress he had started to fall in love with, was actually Rosamund Santiago, a Homeland Security Investigations special agent and in the federal program. It was less about the fact that she had intentionally misled him, given that Rosamund had no choice really, but that he had failed to discover this on his own as a former FBI agent who was usually quite perceptive in unraveling clues that presented themselves. Maybe I didn’t want to know that Tisha was anything other than what or whom she pretended to be, Russell told himself, as he drove back to the police department. Maybe it was safer for him to wear blinders so he wouldn’t be hurt again, as he was when he lost his wife and daughter.

But didn’t hurt come with the territory of living? Would he ever be able to truly steel himself from the pain of things being out of his control? He had to believe that there really was something there between him and Tisha or Rosamund. She had as much as told him so. He didn’t believe for one minute that the way they were together in and out of bed was just for show. Rosamund had been put into a nearly impossible situation after watching her partner die and being left to fend for both of them against a human smuggler. Obviously, the DHS felt her testimony was critical to putting away Simon Griswold. So much so that, rather than risk her being killed after Griswold had put a hit out on her by having her continue her normal duties as an HSI special agent, they took the unusual step for someone in her position and placed her in witness protection. In which case, they hoped to keep Rosamund alive long enough to testify against Griswold.

She had never asked to be temporarily relocated to Weconta Falls and pursued by a lonely police detective who found her attractive. Rosamund must have seen something in him that made her want to get to know him as much as he sought to get to know her. They clicked, pure and simple. Having a different name to go by and different circumstances coming to light wouldn’t change that. The fact that, as Tisha, she risked life and limb by exposing herself to prevent a little girl from being abducted by a known child sex offender told Russell all he needed to know about Rosamund.

He owed it to her and himself not to bail at a time when Rosamund’s life was in danger, with her being pursued by a hired killer who may have found his target. Once her safety had been assured and the business of testifying in court against a trafficker was over, they could decide where to go with their own relationship.
